Interface Sketch: Well designed Interactive Visualization

For this week’s sketching exercise I found a well designed interactive design. Project Ukko (http://project-ukko.net/map.html) visualizes seasonal wind predictions for the energy sector.

Why this design works well…

  • The legends helps to unify symbols of skill, speed, change, and power of wind – useful for people who are not familiar with this type of visualization (universal)
  • The variety of weight, angle, and opacity portrays a lot of specific information in a singular line.
  • The red circle to select an area is obvious to see – helps to pin point the users place on the page
  • The detailed analysis after clicking on the space still works well with the colour scheme and is clear to the average user of this program.
